Newsletter 9/4/25

Sparing Thoughts Vol.I

Introduction

Growing up bowling in Memphis during the late 80’s and 90’s I was blessed to have witnessed some of the most competitive and influential bowlers around. One of the things I miss the most was a newspaper style newsletter that was published monthly by a fellow Memphian Joe Cianciolo. I unfortunately didn’t appreciate it enough when it was in publication except for rushing to see if I was mentioned in the new edition. The only article I recall being in was a write up of a tournament where I beat Grady Creasie in the finals. Joe’s publication was the 1st I ever saw of a “Memphis Top 15 List” (at the time the list pitted Richard “Taz” Howell against Walter Ray Williams). If you are reading this there is a good indication you are aware of the brush fire that stemmed from a Facebook post that started Ego Bowling. This “newsletter” is my attempt at paying homage to something I believe our community is missing and desperately needs.

What’s Striking

The houses are full, the pinsetters are active which means……the fall season has started. All the houses have started their fall season leagues. A lot of the same old business as usual, and also some new. The New…..901 Bowl has installed string-pin pinsetters. This has not come without controversy inspired by national discussions on the topic. 901 Bowl is also in the midst of a rather large transformation utilizing 1 of the newest, eye popping visual effects that no one else in the area has.

Strike Zones Monday Mens League grew with bowlers from Arkansas and Tupelo coming over, as well as more guys from Bowlero. Their Tuesday league is just about at capacity with teams coming from other centers. Same with their Thursday night league.

Bowlero Bartlett has a new league on Wednesday night with teams coming from as far as Jackson, Jonesboro and Tupelo to compete. They currently have 23/24 teams. Some of the best bowlers in the midsouth competing for 10k.

Cordova Lanes has roughly the same leagues as last year. During the summer they hosted 630 athletes over a 3 day span for the National Veterans Golden Age Games with great success.

Regional Happenings

– The PWBA will be in Smyrna TN Oct 5th for the PWBA Regional. This is a great opportunity to watch some of the areas (possibly see the reigning Queens Champ) compete nearby.

Local Happenings

-Michael Brownlee was inducted into the MAUSBC Hall of Fame back in July.

-Quis Tournaments is having the “Nightmare Doubles” at Bowlero Oct 10-12. Come out and see touring pros like Ryan Barnes, Cam Crowe, ALS, Micheal Martell, Sean Lavery, Spencer Robarge and many others.

3 in the 10th…..URETHANE

Just kidding. Its a trigger word for some. This is where we will post “Hot Topics” that are setting the bowling world upside down.

    • It is something I have toyed with for a while. Saw 1 in Shawnee and another in Houston and Dallas that sort of pushed me over the top to do it. I am hoping to elaborate on it some. The entire blog/newsletter thing is a very new topic for me.
