Sparing Thoughts Vol.II
What’s Striking
Standards
Do me a favor and humor me for a bit. Do an internet search for “Memphis Golf Association”. Just see what pops up, and click on what might be the 1st link. Just poke around. Next, do another internet search for “Memphis Tennis Association”. Do the same thing. Now, search “Memphis Bowling Association”. Poke around, if you can. Notice anything.
Let me stop you from accusing me of picking on our association. I randomly did the same search on 5 other associations. Houston (quite nice at 1st glance, but also a basket case), Nashville (equally as bad), Chicago (Shockingly good and up-to-date), St Louis (some good, some bad, some ugly) and then BALTIMORE. WOW is all I have to say. From the city that has brought us such an ugly eye, BEAUTIFUL website. I would have never guessed it.
The object behind this isn’t just to shine light on, or pick on our association. There are other associations out there that are very similar if not worse (I’ll be honest. I looked up Roanoke West Virginia USBC, much to my surprise it was actually better). My 1st point is the differences between 2 sports that are typically used in comparison to bowling, tennis and golf. The members of those sports hold tennis and golf to a higher standard. This isn’t just a board thing, it’s a member thing (an us thing). If you hold your standards low enough, you get what you pay for. Where as holding standards up higher, you tend to elevate things around you.
In my line of work, it is better to not have an SOP than to have an SOP and not follow it. It would be better for some of these associations to not put out information at all than to put out information 5 YEARS OLD. Some had broken page links, etc. Yes, don’t get me wrong, some of them looked really well put together and eye catching (probably expensive), but that’s not what’s necessary. Just make sure what you do have published…..WORKS.
I am just as guilty of not getting involved as 99% of our association. The best I could tell from our associations page, we have approximately 2200 USBC members as of 2023. The reason I say 2023, is because they don’t have a more recent average list. Of the 2200, I would assume maybe AT MOST 500 are youth, and I am pretty sure that is on the high side. So that leaves us with 1700ish adult bowlers. Of those 1700, do you know how many adults were at the annual board meeting where they voted on officiers……go ahead, I will wait. I don’t think there was 100 people there, which is sad. Before criticizing our association and their decisions, show up. I am just as guilty
While looking at other cities association pages, the ones that didn’t make me cringe, I saw some interesting and inspiring things. Green Bay for instance. Really nice page, and love the idea of their Green Bay Open. As I stated in the previous newsletter and in my rant, bowling can not survive off the model from 1950. In order to maintain and hopefully bring league numbers back up, we need to bring new ideas to the floor. If you choose to just sit there and do nothing, don’t complain when you get an award from the association and its a pen that says congratulations on your 600 Game…..(I did not mistype that). We need to raise our standards.

Unlike a lot of other tournament directors, Gary isn’t making money off of this, he is doing it for us, the bowlers. There are just 2 left, FILL THEM.

3 in the 10th…..URETHANE
SO, the 1st topic IS going to be Urethane after all. Wasn’t my intention, but you could say USBC forced it, lol. What you need to know, as well as what doesn’t concern you. Well, if you are a THB (Typical House Bowler), you have nothing to be concerned with. Of course the USBC had to go and issue another convoluted ruling that concerns maybe 1% of the entire USBC membership. While I have no data that contradicts nor confirms their findings, I can tell you there is NO shortage of opinions on the subject. Because of that I will stick to fact. The entire argument was aimed at lane pattern integrity, or so they claim. The harsh reality is, if you wanted to manipulate a pattern intentionally, you can accomplish that without urethane just as easily as with. I am not sure if they (USBC) are aware of the can of worms that they may have just opened. 1 of the problems the current game has is, lack of faith and trust in the governing body, this controversial topic and ruling did NOT help this. Here is the ruling that they rolled out. It is broken down into what is no affect, what is affect, what is restricted (so silly) and where you can not use urethane AT ALL.
Beginning 1/1/2026
WHAT IS NOT AFFECTED BY THE RULE (NO change)
-Leagues. If you bowl league and that’s it, just do as you have been doing.
-Team USA Trials
-USBC Collegiate Sectional and regular season USBC events
-Junior Gold Qualifiers
-USA Bowling Regionals
-USBC Senior Championships
-USBC Youth Scratch Championships
-The Forty Frame Game
-Survivor Tournament
WHAT IS AFFECTED BY THE RULE
HAS to be 78D Hardness
-USBC Open Nationals/USBC Women’s Nationals/Bowlers Journal
Championship/USBC Senior Masters/USBC Super Senior Classic/USBC Senior
Queens. As of this article there are 4. Hammer Black Pearl, Ebonite The One
Urethane 78D, Storm IQ 78U and Motiv Tank Rampage Pearl.
Restricted Use (Qualifying Only)
-Junior Gold Championships: 78D urethane will be allowed for qualifying only. Beginning with match play and through the finals, no urethane ball will be allowed.
NOT ALLOWED AT ALL(No urethane can be used in the following tournaments)
-U.S. Open
-USBC Masters
-PWBA (any PWBA events, national and regional)
-U.S. Women’s Open
-USBC Queens
-U22 Masters and Queens
-USBC Intercollegiate Team and Singles Championships (Nationals)

I hope this makes it as clear as the Mississippi River.

The Future
– There is a new Jr Gold Youth series near by. Its called the Arkansas Blue Jr Gold Series. Their next event is October 12th in Cabot Arkansas. Their 1st tournament of the season had right at 40 kids total. The size of the field is irrelevant. Its always good practice to go bowl in a center you are not familiar with. You can follow them on Facebook.
-Youth Scratch Master’s Next Event is October 11th & 12th in Wichita Kansas, home of the Wichita State Shockers. Great time for a campus visit….hint, hint.
– SYC (Storm Youth Championships Tournaments) made a stop in Smyrna TN, September 12-14. The best youth bowlers from around the country where there (Bella Castillo, Larielle Tharps, Macy Jones, Malia Briggs, Matteo Quintero, Jackson Dyess, Braden McDonough). We had 5 local youth competing. U15 Boys (17 Entries): Kayden Curry (4th). U18 Girls (40 Entries): Kenzie Bond (34th), Anna Horner (40th). U18 Boys (65 Entries): Elijah Pipkin (12th), Garrett Brown (58th)
-Just as a reminder Tim Hartigan has a Facebook group in order to help promote and help high school bowlers achieve the opportunity of bowling collegiately. It is never too late. The name of the group is Midsouth Bowlers Spotlight. If you have any questions please contact Tim Hartigan directly.

Appreciate your efforts in what you’re doing to draw more attention and interest to our sport. You’re reincarnating what used to happen in the “Glory Days” of 1960″s and 1970’s. I have really missed be able to participate so far this season due to the stroke I suffered back in July and hope to return as soon as possible. For those that love our sport, don’t take your privilege for granted.

Thank you, I very much appreciate that. I absolutely love this sport and what it has given me. I love the idea of recreating portions (the good portions) of an era that we have glamorized in folklore. The Rudy’s, the Roth’s, the Holman’s, the Engan’s (most don’t know that name), the Schlegel’s and of course the Lichstein’s. I left off so many. Being around the south side of Chicago, I heard SO many stories about Don McCune and that entire gang, just crazy. I hope to inspire something memorable very soon.
